Using Drones to Map Vegetation Along Shorelines With Correlator3D
Property owners on lakes are in constant battle with vegetation encroachment along their shorelines. If vegetation is left unmanaged, access to docks can become blocked and create both maintenance issues and loss of property value. Austin Scheib, ASPRS Certified Drone Pilot with Hannover Design Services, uses drones to map and monitor vegetation for landowners so that they can make informed decisions on mitigation methods.

“Being able to mobilize and capture imagery on-site allows us to monitor conditions as the flight occurs, and adjust flight plans as necessary. Unlike most mapping projects, the sun and its glare can really affect our ability to see the vegetation we are looking for. Correlator3D allows us to process and edit our orthomosaics to ensure optimal results.”

WORKFLOW
High resolution imagery was acquired with consideration for the sun’s position overhead. With water, the sun’s reflection can cause problems in processing so it must be mitigated. A high amount of overlap is a good way to do this. A DEM was then generated with Correlator3D and edited (flattened) over the water to ensure the best orthos. Once the orthos were generated and the mosaicking was completed, those with reflections from the sun hindering mosaic color balancing were removed. Reprocessing the mosaic without these allowed for a well-defined and color balanced image of the lake and its vegetation.
DELIVERABLES
Color-balanced orthomosaic.
BENEFITS
Correlator3D allows full control over the photogrammetric mapping process. When working over water, there are editing options for the DEM and/or the ability to import a previously flattened surface. Additionally, orthos can be added or removed from the overall project to ensure the best color balance possible.
